Club HOT 2019-2020

Picture
Club HOT's first organized activity this year was working in tandem with The Tree People.  We joined this group in San Francisquito Canyon where we worked to restore native and natural habitats in SCV.  We learned how to identify invasive vs. natural species and worked at removing the invaders.  We then moved to a previously restored area and tended the habitat.  What a great day outside with sun on our faces, dirt on our hands, giving back to the natural wonders found in SCV!

Club HOT also designed and made hand-made placemats for the Thanksgiving Feast for the SCV Senior Center.  The many artistic talents of our club members were evident.  In December we hosted a school wide Canned Soup Drive which benefited the Help the Children organization.  They were thrilled to receive over 500 canned food items to stock their shelves.  This drive was a team competition in which Team Fusion placed first!

In January and February Club HOT partnered with ASB, Club LIFE and DFY to make hand-made Valentines for the many senior citizens in our valley.  All together we made over 300 Valentines that were delivered in conjunction with the Meals on Wheels program.  In March many of our HOTties helped our local Prayer Angels for Military.  We donated and packed items for the St. Patrick's Day care packages for military personnel deployed from SCV.  We also decorated cards and wrote notes to the soldiers abroad.  What a wonderful and worthwhile way to spend a morning.

Unfortunately COVID-19 cut our year short, but I am certain that Club HOT members went on to serve others in need during stay-at-home orders.  We look forward to what 2021 brings!  Enjoy the slideshow of our numerous outings and events this year.

Club HOT 2018 - 2019
7th Grade Registration @ Club Alley

Club HOT had another busy year!  As seen above, several HOTTies donated their time at registration in August to let incoming 7th graders know all about Club HOT and our service in the community.

In September about 20 club members participated in the SCV River Rally (see below).  After receiving a quick crash course from a field biologist about the ecology of the area, we picked up trash from the Santa Clara riverbed and enjoyed getting to know one another in a fun setting.  We also participated in the Environmental Expo after the event.  We got free food, drinks, samples and more!  What a fun kick-off event for the club!

PictureTrick-or-Treat!
In October our club joined up with ASB to Trick-or-Treat for The SCV Food Pantry.  We dressed in costume and walked the neighborhood of Old Orchard 2 to collect canned and boxed foods.  We filled several cars full of food, enjoyed meeting & getting to know several ASB members and had fun Trick-or-Treating!

Picture
November had our club creating table decorations for the Senior Center's annual Thanksgiving meal in Newhall.  HOTties transformed glass jars into beautiful candle centerpieces using fall leaves, glitter and raffia.  These decorations added a lot of color, warmth and holiday spirit to the tables!

In February Club HOT invited ASB, DFYT and Club LIFE to join them in making Valentine cards for seniors who receive Meals on Wheels.  We took over Tanner Hall after school one day and crafted over 300 hand-made Valentines.  Often times house-bound senior citizens have little interaction with the outside world.  This Valentine's Day we let them know that they were not forgotten!
In the spring of 2019 Club HOT continued with the tradition of our 5th annual PB & J drive.  Students from all across campus donated jars of peanut butter, jelly and sandwich baggies.  We then took those supplies and made 500+ PB & J sandwiches for the homeless community.  The remaining peanut butter and jelly was donated to "Sandwich", a non-profit in SCV that feeds the homeless throughout the year.

Our final activity of the year was HOT to TROT in May.  This event featured Club HOT members helping "Teachers Receive Our Time" on campus.  Students cleaned the weight room in the gym, filed papers in the office and sorted/stamped/cleaned/organized in many other classrooms.  We enjoy giving back to our own school and this is always a highlight for all involved.

Thank you to all HOTties for
another successful year!

Club HOT members started the year off with a bang!  Approximately 20 club members met at COC on September 9th to participate in "Santa Clarita's 13th Annual Patriots Packing Day".  Volunteers packed numerous care packages for our local military currently overseas and made thank you cards for our local first responders.  The event focused on showing gratitude to our HEROES that save lives and protect each and every one of us every day.  We were very excited and proud to be part of this event!

On October 11th our HOTties participated in our first HOT to TROT (Teachers Receive Our Time) event.  Club members helped various staff members on campus with cleaning, sorting, filing, organizing and assistance in their own rooms.  Feedback was positive on both ends; staff loved the help and students loved helping out at their own school.  We will have another HOT to TROT event in second semester.

During the month of November club members made table decorations for the Newhall Senior Center's annual Thanksgiving meal.  HOTties crafted festive fall pumpkins out of strips of paper and applied glitter to fall fruits, vegetables and pine cones to make the seniors' table sparkle!

Our first Warm Winter Wear drive was a success in December.  We made this a school wide team competition which encouraged more students to participate.  We collected blankets, jackets, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and scarves to see our William S. Hart families through a cold winter.  In total, over 300 items were donated to this drive!  Way to go Placerita!!

In February our club hosted our second HOT to TROT event after school.  Several teachers requested our help in filing, sorting, cutting, stamping, cleaning and organizing their rooms.  We LOVE to give back to the staff at PJHS!

Throughout the months of March and April, all students were encouraged to donate peanut butter, jelly and sandwich baggies to Club HOT.  This was our 4th annual PB & J drive and we collected approximately 600 units. The supplies were used to make PB & J sandwiches for the homeless community on two different afternoons.  The remaining jars were donated to Sandwich, a local non-profit with a mission to feed those less fortunate.

Club HOT finished the 2018 school year with collecting gently used backpacks for school aged children.  It was a fun and productive year!  Thank you, HOTties, for your service and commitment.

Club HOT 2016-2017

Club HOT kicked off the school year with 16 members participating in the 22nd Annual SCV River Rally.  We met at the Newhall Community Center bright and early on September 17th.  HOTties received training from field biologists regarding the riverbed flora and fauna and then set out to pick up trash for 2 hours.  After getting ourselves dirty, we were able to attend the Environmental Expo while enjoying donuts, shaved ice and an environmental education provided by community leaders and various volunteer groups.  It was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful morning!  Thank you to those who attended this event to serve our local community.

In October, Club HOT partnered with ASB and went trick-or-treating for canned foods to donate to the SCV Food Pantry in Newhall.  We went around the Old Orchard neighborhood and collected enough canned and boxed food to fill an entire truck bed and an SUV!  Students had fun dressing up in costume and mixing and mingling with ASB students.  New friendships were made while serving others.

November had HOTties busy making Thanksgiving decorations for the Senior Center in Newhall.  Club members gathered twice after school to make fall themed candle holders and pumpkin centerpieces.  These darling decorations will spruce up the tables on Thanksgiving Day as seniors sit down to enjoy a nice, warm meal.

In December, Club HOT hosted a "Soup for Seniors" drive.  This drive was a team competition to generate excitement and interest across the entire campus.  Competition was fierce and resulted in 882 cans of soup being donated to senior citizens across the SCV this winter.

January and February had our HOTties busy crafting over 150 hand-made Valentine Cards to be given to seniors who receive a "Meals on Wheels" visit on Valentines Day.  This is the third year that we have partnered with the community service club at Sierra Vista Junior High and the Senior Center in Newhall. Feedback from the Valentine recipients is always warm and positive.  We look forward to this activity every year!

Our 3rd annual peanut butter and jelly drive was a HUGE success!  Thank you to all who donated.  HOTties were able to partner with "Sandwich", a local non-profit group, to make 550 PB & J sandwiches to help feed the homeless community on Skid Row in Los Angeles.  Club HOT donated all the PB & J to this heart-felt organization to help them achieve their mission of providing meals to the homeless.

Club HOT 2015-2016

In October, Club HOT (Help Our Town) hosted a shoe drive as their first community service event.  As a school, we collected approx. 150 pairs of shoes and donated them to the Spotlight Arts Center in Newhall.  We also participated in the SCV Food Pantry 5K Run/Walk event on Sunday, 10/25.  We had over 100 participants (students, staff and families) and earned the "Top Team" trophy for having the largest group in attendance at this event.  However, the highlight of the morning was raising over $1500 for the Food Pantry!

In November, the club assisted the Senior Center in preparation for Thanksgiving day by moving tables, chairs and decorating the dining hall.  In December, we held a gift card drive to benefit teens at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles.  In addition, we collected toys, books and puzzles for younger patients.  A huge shout-out to Sarah Bob and Grace Howell for organizing this amazing and worthwhile event.

Club HOT made 150 Valentine cards that were delivered to local home-bound senior citizens on Valentines Day.  We love this activity and our partnership with Sierra Vista Junior High School!  Often times our senior citizens are over-looked on holidays and they LOVE receiving our hand-made cards.

In April our HOTties hosted a peanut butter and jelly drive to benefit "Sandwich", a local non-profit that feeds the homeless on Skid Row.  The drive resulted in over 500 jars of peanut butter and jelly!  Club HOT members, in partnership with Sandwich, came together one afternoon after school and hand made over 200 sandwiches to be distributed to the homeless in LA.  What a rewarding experience!

To finish out the year, Club HOT hosted a "gently used" backpack drive on campus.  Students and PJHS families donated re-usable backpacks for students who are in need to start the next school year off on the right foot. We collected over 20 backpacks in all styles, colors and designs.

As always, stay tuned to MMTV for more info!

CLUB HOT 2014-2015

Club HOT (a.k.a. Help Our Town) has had several meetings already this year.  We held a month long Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign throughout October.  Every Wednesday, students and staff were encouraged to wear pink and to make donations in the name of Breast Cancer.  HOT members  manned a booth at both lunches to collect donations from the student body.  We encouraged a friendly competition between the 7th and 8th grade students.  We collected a total of $864 which will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Fund.   Way to go Miners!

The SCV Food Pantry 5K Walk/Run was held on Sunday, 10/26 @ Central Park.  Placerita was proud to see 130 students, staff and family members at this worthwhile event.  Our blue and gold student body took over the 5K course and thundered across the finish line!  We raised close to $2,000 for the Food Pantry and won the "Top Team" award/trophy for having the largest group in attendance.  It was a beautiful sight on a gorgeous fall morning!

Club HOT held a "Gift Cards for Good Cheer" campaign to help teens and young ones at Children's Hospital LA enjoy the holiday season.  We collected teen friendly gift cards (Amazon, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, etc.) and new, unwrapped toys.  Thank you to S.B. for organizing the campaign and for delivering the donations!

Picture
Our "Teens for Jeans" drive to benefit homeless teens is now complete!  We collected, folded, counted, bagged and delivered 640 pairs of jeans to Aeropostale to be distributed to homeless teens in SCV.  We more than doubled our donation amount from last year
---- way to go Miners!!  Your old jeans will be much appreciated by someone new!

Picture
Valentines for Seniors  --- we once again partnered with Sierra Vista JHS to make 300 Valentines!  The hand-made Valentine cards for our local seniors were delivered with their "meals-on-wheels" on Valentines Day.

PRESCRIPTION GLASSES DRIVE - In partnership with Hart High School, we collected over 50 pairs of prescription eyeglasses to be distributed to developing countries.  We are fortunate to have turned "VISION INTO ACTION!"

Our peanut butter and jelly drive (& sandwich bags too) was a huge success!  We provided over 450 jars of PB & J and sandwich bags.  We loved supporting the non-profit group "Sandwich" to accomplish their goal of feeding the less fortunate on Skid Row.

Club HOT also coordinated and ran a "Nepal Earthquake Relief" campaign.  Students and staff were encouraged to donate in their classrooms toward the relief efforts in Nepal.  Together, we raised over $400 to send to the children in need in Nepal.  Thank you for your support!

To finish out the busy year, HOTties collected gently used backpacks to donate to school children in need.  I am sure these bags will bring a smile to many faces as students get ready for the new school year!

CLUB HOT 2013-2014

Club HOT (aka Help Our Town) is well under way in 2013.  Over 30 students and staff members participated in the SC River Rally Clean Up in September.  HOTties found themselves at the Newhall Community Center and adjacent riverbed early one morning to pick up trash and debris.  Although the job was a little dirty, we had a great time cleaning up the river bed and supporting our community!

On the freezing morning of October 27, over 65 students, staff and parents from PJHS participated in the SCV Food Pantry Walk/Run for Hunger 5K. We were super happy to raise over $1000 for the food pantry and support our community.  Additionally, we were awarded the runner up "Top Team" trophy for having the second largest school group in attendance.

The typhoon in the Philippines really touched the hearts of Club HOT members, as well as the students and staff at PJHS.  Collectively, we raised $4,000 to send to the Philippines to assist in natural disaster aid.  Our students and staff were very generous with their coins and cash --- donating out of the goodness of their hearts.

In  November - December, Club HOT held a drive for needed supplies to benefit the SCV Homeless Shelter.  We took huge loads of TP, cereal, hygiene products, paper towels, kleenex, disposable eating utinsels, etc. to the shelter.  This project was a team competition and the top 3 teams were awarded spirit points.  The shelter was WAY happy to see us show up & now they are stocked on staples for quite a while!

Third quarter was the busiest time of the year for Club HOT.  In February we held a jean drive to support Teens for Jeans and collected 314 pairs of jeans!  These jeans were distributed to teens in need in SCV.  We also worked with Sierra Vista Junior High School and made 150+ hand-made Valentine cards that were distributed to home bound seniors.  We partnered with the SCV Meals on Wheels program to get the Valentines into the hands of our local seniors.  In March we made 60+ sack lunches for the homeless shelter.  HOTties had a great time making PBJ sandwiches and assembling fruit, granola bars and snacks into the lunch bags.

Fourth quarter Club HOT will partner with the PE Department to collect books for the Library for London project.  These books will be part of an originating collection for a new library in the town of London, CA.

CLUB H.O.T. (aka Help Our Town) is a newer club on campus which supports the Santa Clarita Valley through community service events.  In October of 2012, we raised $1200 for the Food Pantry by participating in their annual 5K walk/run event.  We were also awarded a top trophy (two years in a row!) for being the junior high school with the most participants!  Placerita really showed their school spirit and generosity!

Club H.O.T. also held a month long Breast Cancer Awareness campaign during October.  Each Friday students and staff were asked to wear solid pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.  Many students on campus also donated money to go toward Breast Cancer Research.  Throughout the month Club H.O.T. collected over $600 and students were able to post messages on a large breast cancer ribbon.

Picture
In February, Club H.O.T.  prepared 70 sack lunches for the Emergency Winter Shelter in Santa Clarita.  We were happy to feed those most in need during this cold winter season.

Club H.O.T  teamed up with Soles4Souls to coordinate a shoe drive during 4th quarter.  We  collected shoes to box and ship to countries in need, especially after a natural disaster.  After a month long collection campaign, we drove 4 trucks and delivered 1674 pounds of shoes to the collection center.  Way to go Placerita!

Club H.O.T. is shaping up to have a fun, busy and productive year!!  Stay tuned to MMTV for meeting times and upcoming events.  New members are always welcome!
